    I added a small amount of cotton fill to the horsehair pads to provide a bit more cushion and to make up for any thickness loss on the horsehair pads due to 42 years of the elements.

    Spring assemblies have been stapled onto the backrest boards. Canvas has been sewn onto the spring asemblies to keep the springs from tearing up the original horsehair pads.

    My name Alex and I 'm writing you from Switzerland . You know how people here in Switzerland are involved in the Volskwagen spirit. I have two VWs at present including a 73 Super beetle convertible which has a 1700 Berg Motor with baby Dells, front and rear lowered, riviera wheels. The second car is a 65 Westi which is fully restored. Featuring black and polished porsche wheels, a 1600 motor with dual kadrons, bug trans, drop spindles in the front with Porsche 944 Turbo brakes . I drive it only by sunny days and when the streets are dry, so you can see how often we can cruise here in Switzerland I am planning to move for goods to Los Angeles, California in a few months and I am thinking about taking my Westi and my Bug with me to L.A. Do you think it is possible ? What do I have to do to make it fully streetable in California ? Does The Californian State have periodicly technical check up (like here in Switzerland) ? What about the smoke check ? Do I have to make it back to all original (resto-cal style) ?. I know it is a lot of questions, but I am really willing to drive my cars in the sunny streets of California. Therefore, any help or advices you could provide me would be so much appreciated !     12/15/04 Wyman Apple Hey if your still thinking about bringing those vw's over here you're in luck anything in california 25 years or older dosent need a "smoke" check but we call it "smog" over here. I have never heard of any technical checks either. You just go to the DMV (department of motorized vechicles) and tell them your story and they get it registered for you. I really do hope you bring yours over I have a 71 westy i'd love to see yours!

    just an old westfalia (i believe) that goes to the Fingerlakes Grassroots Music Festival in upstate NY every year. its in pretty good shape, but has some old type of ground effects on it.

    Here are the new seat backrests I made drying after the first coat of Varathane. Getting the proper thickness of the wood required laminating two pieces together, as the originals are 5/16" thick, or the metric equivilent of that. Modern day 1/4" is less than 1/4", so I laminated 1/4" (really 3/16") with 1/8". Then cut to size, corners rounded and edges slightly routered so as to not wear down the wool over time due to it being stretched over a sharp edge.

    This is an upclose shot of the "keyhole" opening that I had to cut to match the original seat backrests. Each backrest has two of these keyholes, along with two rivit holes, as a backing plate with the same opening is rivited to the backside of the backrests. The backrest is then hung on a frame with two carriage bolts that slip into these keyhole openings, allowing for the backrests to be removed as they become the center section of the bed.
