The front end of my '55 single cab seemed to be sagging, so I figured I'd look into it while I was changing the front brake lines and misc other long-overdue maintenance. Here's what I found: one of the springs sticking *out* of the trailing arm, meaning it was broken. (see the next picture for a shot of the spring leaves)

Here's the broken front torsion springs. Only 3 leaves were intact between the top and bottom sets, and the bottom set were completely broken! I'm stuck right now trying to get the driver's side trailing arm in; I think there might be a piece of spring left in the tube!

this is my latest "find" if you can all it that. the story is as follows... when I was in high school over ten years ago the guy who lived across the street from me had a '63 deluxe sunroof bus. it always parked on the street. he moved, I moved, and years later he had me work on the bus. I have done some major work to it over the last few years. last week he called me up and aked if I could take care of the bus for a while. I have an extra parking spot so I agreed to babysit his bus for him while he has to move out of state to recover from an illness. the bus is a very late '63 that was a special order tourist delivery vehicle. it has a mix of euro and US specs. steering lock, overrider bumpers, red taillights, etc. the original rear seats have been replaced with earlier units. so anyway, I am getting the bus ready to drive over to my place and the owner says that I need to load the camper kit onto it. (remember this bus has full seating) so out from under the tarp I find a half complete SO-23 westy kit. bonus. until I look at what is attatched to the bottom of one of the seat cusions. here we have it...... the five leg middle seat. apparently many years ago before the current owner bought the bus, the previous owner decided to make a camper kit with whatever was available. that happened to be a 6-leg middle seat and a SO-23 westy kit. so he hacked away. I told the owner what it was, what the seat would have been worth if it was complete ($1000+/-) and what it was now worth $0.01 per pound. I asked if I could have it and he gave it to me (just the seat bottom) and I took a pic and threw it on the scrap pile out back.

I got this '62 Kombi for free after stopping in every other day asking about it for weeks. Before this it was painted in green and black cammo. On the tow home I had to lean out the window to steer since the windshields were painted black. You should have seen the looks on my neighbors faces when I got it home! It donated its running gear so that my wife and I could make a cross-country trip. I put a set of Porsche Fuchs on it and then gave it a fellow Bus nut. Note the Kewl Rossi headlight rings and sano shaved cargo door handles!

This barndoor had laid in the grass in a wrecking yard for approximately 20 years. I discovered it by accident and acquired it from the original owner. It rough but can be restored, I hope!

I'm working on a website link to the entire article. Amazing shots of the destruction of an OG logo panel. This article and several others were the inspiration for my old "Rusty VanBondo" cartoons. I oughta get off my ass and do some fresh ones...

Seen in a bus yard near downtown L.A., they have the nerve to paint their bus like ours. I'm planning a protest sit-in to get them to change their paint jobs! No Justice No Peace!!

According to the site:
"If everyone had to own one of these as a first car as I did, there would be no traffic jams anywhere. At least half of us would be so turned off by the experience of owning a car, that we would seek alternate means of transportation."

"There was no heat--unless, that is, the auxiliary gas heater caught fire."

"The flower stickers were the only things that held the car together."

"The bus had no heat, blew over in the wind and used the driver's legs as its first line of defense in an accident."

"It was a death trap on the highway-you could never go fast enough. The chances were good that you'd be hit from the rear."
