Pix of bus-like vehicles. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and man of VW's period competitors tried to emulate their sucess with the transporter. Even Chrysler is a modern day hanger-on, claiming to have invented the minivan (VW 1949), and claiming to have invented the double-door (VW 1953).

What a strange weekend. First off; I saw the infamous May 72 issue of nation geographic just sitting on top of a pile of old magazines for sale at the library...10 cents! Then I picked up a old issue of "special interest autos" and found a big article on the "L'Universelle" In which they mentioned taking all the good stuff from the VW Transporter and GMC Carryalls and coming up with something which would cost more than a Cadillac.. it never made it past the "concept" stage. These guys new how to make a "production" "slammed" bus in 1955! And check out the cool air intake built in the roof. And then Driving around my own little town of Benicia CA I noticed the National meet of "Borgward owners". About 15 funky little German cars including a Goliath Combi. I talked to a guy selling some Borgward (Blaupunkt) radios; he said he had one with the word Volkswagen on it from 1965 or so...I bought it site unseen. Then I went down the street to pick up a 1950's blender I had my eye on for awhile at a local antique store, and found a beautiful-Mint 3-piece set of 50's-or-60's Samsonite luggage, the same color as the original paint on my Deluxe! I cant wait for next weekend :-)

06/16/03 David G. I saw one of these panel vans in a junkyard! But rather than having the "open" grille it was made up of horizontal slats... a very VERY unusual looking vehicle. These are suposedly very rare.

January 1962 Popular Mechanics showing the GM L'Universelle and it's production version, the Corvair Greenbriar. I fully dig the folding, lift-up door, but I'm not sure how practical that would have been in real-life. It looks similar to the cargo compartment doors on a greyhound bus.

This is a "TUG" and is used by United Airlines as a general purpose hauling/towing/transporter. Note the drop gates, split windshield, the shape of the door with sliding window, and the forward driving position.

This clone I found tonight, when I took the train to a party. It's taken from the February BVG-brochure. BVG is the Berlin traffic company. This bus is an 1944 Alfa Romeo "Obus", manufactured in Rome, Italy. It's electrical powered, connected to overhead wires. 17 of these busses were used in Germany, 3 in Berlin. 1948 the busses were no longer needed. 1952 they were executed...R.I.P.! :-)

Hy everybody! Some people here in good old germany think about the car in the upper right corner! Does anyone knew this car? We do not think this is a Tempo Matador or a Lloyd, the two cars below. Don't know if it's right.
07/03/02 fs you ask about the blue "panel" (homemade camper conversion?) van being driven on dirt?

note it has the windscreen wipers mounted above the glass as the tempo has them.
