Where did you meet the busses? I assume Bangkok near by the Khao San Road, or in Chiang Mai?

A few Bay Windows usually morph as part of H-Town's art car community; the bus known as the Turn-On (year unknown) is a usual sighting in the Houston Heights.

I spent a few hours on the Internet and found these pictures. This bus was converted to 4WD with what looks like a conglomeration of 4WD Vanagon componants and what looks like a '60's differential up front. The square windows, narrow tailgate, louvers back of the rear fenders instead of the vents behind the back side windows and the old type side doors are appearantly still a standard offering, as I'd seen them on other similar late buses. It might even have an upright-fan engine rather than the 914/Type4 suitcase type. There's even a transfer lever by the gear shift like on other 4X4's. A rig like this with doors on both sides would be my dream bus. A pair of platform trucks consisting of single cab and a double cab each with the 4WD would round out my dream fleet. I had to flip a coin to decide whether or not to check "Bay Window(68-79)" in the catagories because the bus is a lot newer than a '79 and only the cab, tail lights and running gear are bay window while the bumpers and the body from the back of the the cab rearward is all "split". My only real question is how is the speedometer hooked up and can the front suspension handle the added stress?

12/15/05 DON 'The Emissary' SERIBUTRA The bus pics are the T1.5s produced in Brasil between 1976-1996. Although the first generation T2s ceased production in Europe in 1967, the splittie continued in Brasil until 1975. When the 1976 model year came along, the first generation T1 was modified to which the front sheetmetal from the 1968-79 Bay Window was grafted on where a few refer to these Buses as mutants.

The shame is that these arent imported into this country. Our so-called safety and emmissions laws are more to keep sensible vehicles out of our country rather than what most think the regs are for. I have also seen bay windows made in the eighties sporting radiators for Vanagon type watercooled abominations and ones with the Audi diesel. A late model watercooled bus made in the late '90's would be nice to have as a parts donor car for my '70. VW made two diesel VW engines in the forties and fitted them in bugs but sadly never manufactured them. The purpose of a VW is for air cooling, not messing with water cooling which is only good for boat engines.I got these off the Internet

04/23/06 Andre Sampaio Those photos are from the Kombi produced here in Brazil.

Due to polution emission level laws it's not produced anymore like in the photo. Since 2006 VW-Brazil changed to a water-cooled motor.

This is the "x-ray" of the Diesel Bus. The engine is AP (water cooled) about 50hp. The cilinders in "in line", not boxer as you can see in the pictures.

03/12/05 Alexis Prappas - Brazil This "is" a Volkswagen water cooled engine built in brazil and used even today in the Gol car (Brazilian Golf) in gas version of course. The engine is a AP600 and it has a 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 cc version.
02/24/05 Dave Thar engine is an Audi four, not a VW engine. It would have been nice if VW had manufactured the deisel version of their own aircooled engine!
The truck itself would make a great parts car for soneone's '71 double cab.

I Installed my new 16" x 8" Cragar SS 980's (for Mercedes Benz) & 225/55/16 tires on the bus last weekend. What a difference in ride & handling they made from my old custom machine shop mated factory centers & 15" x 8" outer rims. They had 225/75/15s on them in the old pic. I will be lowering her soon & trying to come up with some air bag resources.

10/12/05 Tom I have too agree on the paint, exellent job.
In my opinion:loose the wheels, they make your bus look like a rollerskate.I have stock 14"wheels on mine, but with 185-55-14 in te back and 165-50-14 down in front. At a fracktion of the cost of mag-wheels I get all the attention at meetings. No clearance problems eather when lowered...
10/12/05 Tom Oh,I forgot:Real guys don't need bags or juice,just lower it ol'school...
02/11/05 VANdalism Paint looks nice. I lowered my '73 with Bus Boy's adjustable front beam and albatross rear plates. Looks the business but rides like hell. I run Empi 5 spokes with 195/45/15 tires and Wolfgang adapters to make them fit. I had clearance problems under the rear fenders and had to stretch the flare a bit. Hope you don't run into the same problem with those meaty tires!

My Work
These are original from the factory "Diesel Kombis" they are build in 1981 and 1982 and they have that strange "front radiator" for cooling the engine. They use to work in very hot temperature, so the engine dont last longer. The VW stop de production because of it, but a lot of people stil use them to work as you can see in the pictures. I had not see any of these with colectors or museum, only in work, so the engine its not so bad. Here in Brazil the Diesel is cheeper than Gas thats wy they try these engine for a couple of years.

12/28/04 DON 'The Emissary' SERIBUTRA Some of these were sold in Mexico and were usually driven into the Southwest U.S. by Mexican nationals. I have seen a few pics of the Brasilian bus which is a mutant of 1950s body panels with the Bay Window parts.
