| 08/30/02 | Dirk | Here's a trick for removing old Bondo that I picked up from a body repair tech. Use a torch and heat up the Bondo from behind, if you have access, then you can use a putty knofe and just scrape it right off. I had a bunch of old Bondo on the front of my bus, I couldn't get behind all of it, so I heated sooome up from in front, and it peeled right off. Please be careful not to set anything on fire, be aware of your suroundings, wiring and such, and keep a fire extinguisher handy. |

I bought a lovely 1979 2 litre type 2 dvon moonraker in cream white - superb condition but has has 3 repair panels fitted ready for spraying. He promised me the van would be serviced , some minor work done and resprayed 5 weeks ago - so far he has done nothing ????
I live in the preston area and would be very grateful if someone can recommend a good mechanic. |

I have a feeling that since it was such an old Bus that maybe the greed of some of our fellow 'hobbyists' forced you to abandon the project.I know that sometimes you have to deal with some pretty smug game players to obtain rare parts.You still need a boatload of cash to pay these individuals in spite of that sort of B.S. Hope that I'm mistaken,but I've seen too much of that crap happening with this hobby in recent years.Good luck with your future projects and congratulations on exhuming the '54 back from the dead.It's a shame you weren't able to see it through to competion.I'm sure the results would've been more pleasing to the eye if you had. Maybe the guy who bought the Bus from you should think about taking a course in asthestetics or something like that...:0) |

I have mixed feelings about the way it's turned out. On one hand, I put a lot of time and money into what 95% of the people would have thought was an unsavable bus. I had a vision for this car, but time and money constraints were keeping me from fulfilling that vision. OTOH, the bus was ~60% new metal when I sold it - all new frame, cargo doors, floors, sides, etc. Sheetmetal-wise, it was very far from original. From that perspective, it's not as much of desecration in my mind to customize it - in a way it was already "customized" with repro panels. I know this guy has sunk a lot of green (no pun intended) into this bus to take it from where I had it to something he can drive to a show, and although he stood on my shoulders doing it, I still gotta respect the fact that he *did* it. |
