This unit was given to me by a family member. When he gave it to me he hoped that I would install it in my 65 Bus, but I have decided to keep it for a later project. From what I have heard, this is a rare piece to have in new condition. Here's the details: It is a "Be Cool" air conditioner. The unit is complete and still in the original box as shown in the pictures. I have all of the paperwork for it including window stickers and a new sticker for the inside of the glove box to update the GVW. The paperwork include templates for cutting sheetmetal and full installation instructions. As I said, this unit is complete. I am quite a bit curious as to see if anyone has any other information about it or if anyone could estimate it's value.

I was fortunate enough to come across several original one-of-a-kind, never reproduced photos of dealerships on the West Coast. These photos were from the estate of Sam Weill the VP of Competition Motors, the west coast distributor in the 50's and 60's and the largest dealer on the west coast. There were many different VW dealerships that Competition Motors supplied and they had photos of most of them. I have posted on this page most of the photos that have Busses in them. Questions or comments? Feel free to email me. If you have a story about any of these dealships or if you have any other information regarding them, PLEASE email me at tgrim@hotmail.com

12/15/03 Que Hey Todd,
Very nice look you have going on there. its really clean. if i were you i'd start adding accessories. Rack, Ladder, coolers, luggage, fog lights etc.. nice work
12/14/03 Todd Thanks Jason.
I like to get feedback about my bus. If you have any other comments or general questions I would appreciate it. I am kinda at the point with my bus that I don't know what else to do with it. I was thinking about putting an air ride suspension on it, but for the price, I dont think that will come for a long time.. or at least until I get out of school. Other than that, maybe a luggage rack with a Coke cooler.. and upgrading the stereo some more. The bus is definatly getting a new custom exhaust this summer.. its gonna be a dual outlet that exits right in front of the rear wheels with probably the slim Harley tips.. but i havent decided on the tips for sure yet. Again, any feedback or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks again for the comments.
Todd

This is my 65 13 Window DeLuxe. It was featured in the November 2000 issue of VW Trends magazine. Here is the story. When I was a sophomore in high school, I discovered and fell in love with VWs. I bought my bus when i was a junior in high school for $125. My father and I took the bus home and worked on it over a period of 2 years including several months at the body shop (Stan's autobody in Cumberland, MD). The colors I chose for the bus are Ford Ultraviolet and straight tint white with purple pearl. I have had the bus lowered 3.5" utilizing Wolfgang international drop spindles and a 68 Type 3 rear end installed with Wolfgang International's conversion kit. If you have any questions or comments feel free to add them.

09/12/03 Ronnie Laursen hey Todd
i just uploaded some pictures under customized.
About your soft front, try KYB shock "gas a just"
they are for heavy vehicles, use the standard length. They seems to work fine for me. I also use them in the rear, but need to reposition the mount to make them travel more..the rear steps a bit.
But i will also use transporter tires in the rear to make i more "stiften".

Like you i use a 1600 Dp for now, but have a 1700 type 4 on the shelf, it will get injection which gives 80 hp as standard. Thats enough for me.
It would be easier to use a 1835 or 1914 type one, but you know i have this engine a like the
strenght of it. But it has to be converted to upright cooling(done), with external oil cooling system and electric fuel pump and other small works.
If you want horsepower and economy go for injection. Or maybe a watercooled..but that's amother story.
hi from Ronnie
09/10/03 Todd Ronnie,
The Type 3 rear end conversion kicks a__ compared to the old reduction box setup. I put short travel shocks in the rear end and they seem to be working great. The drop spindle front end may need a little tuning on my bus though. It seems to bounce, so it may be a little too soft. Do you know of any quick fixes for this problem.
As far as my engine goes, it is just a good ole 1600dp, but I have plans to correct that in the near future. I am investing in an 1835cc with dual Weber 44's. The motor will probably be in order for a rebuild, but it'll push my bus a lot better than the 1600.
What are you running in your bus? And do you have any pics on here of it? Also, if you have any leads on a larger displacement engine.. nonstroker for practical purpose, that would be great in case the deal on this 1835 falls through. Thanks for the comment.
Todd
09/08/03 Ronnie Laursen hey Todd
cool bus dude, except for the type3 tranny i have the same setup on my 65' doubledoor. Isn't just so mych better than stock! Have you installed new rearshock mount(to give shocks more workspace)? Or maybe short shocks. I feel my bus is a little hard in the rear. What about engine stock or stroker?

cheers from Denmark .. Ronnie
Deluxes are harder thatn sambas, more "strickt"

12/26/04 marcelo lopez I am from Argentina, he/she wanted to know if this apparatus is good for a Type ll refrigerated by air. And which the price is?
03/13/04 Todd I have all the paperwork for this a/c unit scanned. I am going to post all of it today on Vintagebus.com
I am really not sure if this unti was ever made for right hand models. I know that this will not fit a right hand drive because the underdahs component is made just for left hand drive buses. Please let me know if you have any information as to the value of the unit. I am not really looking to sell at this time, but I am curious as to how much it is worth.

Thanks,
Todd
01/16/04 jim soulios Greetings todd, have u found any further info on ac & is it available 4 right hand models ?

I got this '62 Kombi for free after stopping in every other day asking about it for weeks. Before this it was painted in green and black cammo. On the tow home I had to lean out the window to steer since the windshields were painted black. You should have seen the looks on my neighbors faces when I got it home! It donated its running gear so that my wife and I could make a cross-country trip. I put a set of Porsche Fuchs on it and then gave it a fellow Bus nut. Note the Kewl Rossi headlight rings and sano shaved cargo door handles!

The Box is said to be the first mini van. I have heard from numerous sources including Curtis Brubaker that Lee Iacoca (sp?) had the Brubaker poster (I'm still looking for one) on his office wall for years prior to the Chrysler Caravan. I heard a story last weekend at the Carlisle show from a personal friend of Todd Gerstenberger (Brubaker's associate). It seems that VW was offered an opportunity to produce the Box. They turned it down because of the Bus. It seems that if the Box and the Bus were side by side, people would pass the bus up to see the Box and that apparently scared the crap out of VW. Now just some anecdotes for you. I was driving through one of our larger towns near here (30K) and a woman with an arm load of groceries walked into a phone pole while looking at the car. I stopped to see if everything was alright and soon had a crowd that took me an hour to get away from. So much for doing the right thing. Another story is from this time last year. I was driving to PA for the Carlisle show. There was an explored that had been shadowing me for about ten miles. You know the one, out front, to the left, to the right, behind. As we approached a construction zone I looked over to see him looking at me with a cheshire cat like grin. Bang, bang, bang he hit those rubber barrels and I never saw him again. Well I hope there's something here for you. I've always said that it has to be DIFFERENT to get my garage space. I keep telling my wife that Detroit never built anything that couldn't sit out in the rain.
