Mike and Ashley
This is our first bus and it is a 1968 westfalia custom.. We are restoring the camper on every plane, and learning as we go on. We are preparing her for a road trip from SoCal to Vancouver. The Name "Red Tide" originates from the first nite we slept in her at the Beach. Her color also resembles a very close shade of the Tide........ Hope to see you on the way up North!

I finally got van-essa's resto almost completed. its only taken about 5 years with the last year totally pulled out of service and up on blocks. think she has turned out pretty nice. not the right year for the mango green--but I've always wanted a mango green bus. now-onto the interior. one of these days she'll be done.

1955 School Bus
Bob
1955 School Bus (for sale)
Can you imagine how the US should have look liked with a different kind of Schoolbusses? Besides the huge billboards, the ever lasting Coca-Cola bottle and some grand fastfood-restaurants, it are the huge bright yellow and black striped schoolbusses with their strange flash lights that pop-up in our mind when we think about the typical features of the country of Uncle Sam. In 1955 they tried to change this part of our dreams when our beloved board of directors at Volkswagen Germany decided it was about time to show the US school community how to bring their kids to school in an economical way. After their incredible succes of economical cars in the US they simply thought this was just the next little step... They built a schoolbus prototype to US-specs and shipped it over to New York where it started its promotional tour over the East Coast to the Midwest. There is even still a St-Louis 1955 service sticker at 3167 miles, which made a certain Bill Bowman, who lives up there, pretty wild! But as soon as the brilliant plan came up as soon they discovered real schoolbus drivers only wanted V8 engines and the promotional tour was not the succes they hoped for. So after only a few months they decided to bring the bus back to Germany (Isn't it easy to make that kind of decisions when you have your own ships sailing the Atlantic ocean?). They stored it in a dark corner of the factory and simply forgot it, cardboard was piled up in and around the bus and the corner became even darker... Until in 1988 a clever and well-known enthusiast was looking around in the factory for some goodies or history, by coincidence the dark corner was discovered again... He didn't exactly know what it was, just like the rest of the factory and for the first time the bus changed hands... She was adopted by the Bulli Kartie's Mobiles Museum. BKMM was an initiative from the German Busclub to drive in rare busses all over the country, so the local people had the chance to see all the weird stuff VW ever made. After serving BKMM for quite some years the lucky finder decided to sell the bus to BBT, where it was treated nicely. Being part of Bob's private collection it was very hard to decide putting it for sale, but there are always other and different cars turning up so the time came to change place and move the bus from the left (private collection) to the right (commercial collection) side of the building. That was after Mike Mallemut and his spous had the drive of their lifetime in the BBT-convoy to Bad Camberg 2003! The bus proved to be well roadworthy and it spinned like it must have toured the US in 1955! On the outside you can find the huge 'Schoolbus' panels on the roof, with the special American 'STOP' flash lights, made by the US brand of Yankee! The panels can easily be removed and transported inside the bus, what makes it easier to drive on the highway. As you can see the back of the bus is 'schoolbus'-yellow and there's a nice set of extra taillights. A favorite extra for many is the spacial step which opens as soon as the side cargo doors open and it's even lighted as well! It's a weird feature but always fun to show to people! The trailer hitch is installed later but mid-fiftys period correct, an ultrarare find! It protects the whole back and underside of the bus what's a good thing of course!

01/03/04 josef The story of this school bus seems to have a allure towards the phantastique and can be considered simply ill informed.
The proto type talk can not be accurate, since these type of Volkswagen buses were in service in the US. During my studies at UVA in Charllotesville VA I did come upon a refuse yard which contained two buses of this kind, lever door openers and yellow rear approach were the unusual features of the two beasts, thus this story is simply ill-informed fabrication or a lie. A VW school bus was indeed exported to the US, not as a proto-type but rather as a standard combi. These buses were at arrival converted to US DOT-school bus specs and then sold to various School systems on the eastern US coast.
with regards JOSEF S.

10/15/03 Mike I am glad you love America as much as we do. And I am sure that Volkswagen forgot about a corner of the factory that they store cars in. And I am also sure they let enthusiasts stroll around the factory treasure hunting. I like the story though.

Took this photo many years ago in County Cork, Ireland, it was being used as a chicken coop. On the side you can just make out P&T (Post and Telegraph), the name of the old postal service. Drove by it recently and there wasn't much left of it.
