Here's another Brazilian oddball. These were intended as taxis, hence the four separate doors for maximum access to the two rows of back seats. Note the door locks and handles on the rear doors are the same as on the front doors. The interior of this bus looks very original. I found these pics in an ad at this site: http://www.oldcars.co.jp/vw/vw.html

To coincide with my Easter bus trip from Johannesburg to the Cape, fellow splittie driver Paul Cochrane organised an informal get-together of split buses and their owners. A great day was had by all on Paul's farm near Stellenbosch. In all, eight splitties arrived for the day.

Here is my 1975 Fleetline panelvan with Jean Viljoen's 75 Fleetline Kombi at a viewsite on False Bay, between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els. Fleetlines were Brazilian RHD buses assembled in South Africa in 1975, one year only.

Here are some pics of the cleanest and most original 1975 Fleetline Kombi I have seen. Fleetlines were built in South Africa in 1975, one year only. They were assembled in SA from Brazilian knocked down kits, in three versions: 15-window Kombis like this, panelvans, and wide-bed single cabs. These were probably the last splitties built anywhere in the world.

Here is a 1975 Fleetline from the South African film "Stander", about the Stander gang, notorious bank robbers in the 1980s. Gang leader Andre Stander came to a wet and sticky end at the hands of police in Florida USA. This was a street scene from Johannesburg, 1976.

04/05/04 fig Porno would have been better for him. If I remember correctly Stander fled SA to the US. He tried to shoot it out with cops in Florida and took several hits from a shotgun.
04/05/04 Thom "wet and sticky?"
Sounds like a porno!

Here is a good example of the fugly Brazilian baysplit hybrid assembled by VWSA from 1976-78. It was a budget model sold alongside German bays, and it replaced the 1975 Fleetline (throwback splittie) as VWSA's budget Type2.

Here is a pair of Autovillas. The one with the roof extension over the cab is a later model. The Jurgens Autovilla was built by a South African caravan builder on a hacked down bay-window walkthru panelvan. They made about 1000 of these between about 1973-77. They were approved by VWSA and were sold new from VW dealer showrooms. Karmann also built a licensed version of the design with LHD for Europe.

This is a nice 1975 Fleetline pick-up that's for sale for ZAR49,000 at my local ACVW shop. It originally had a wide load deck. Fleetlines were made in South Africa in 1975, one year only. They were locally assembled from Brazilian SKD or CKD kits in three versions: 15-window Kombis, panelvans and wide-bodied pick-ups like this one. Probably the last splitties built anywhere in the world.

A guy I know has this 11/1958 RHD camper, with 4 winding windows in the back! The camper interior kit is gutted. There is also a factory-look sunroof mounted very far forward (cuts out overhead air distributor), and also a funky hatch on the left rear corner to give access to LPG cylinder. Does anyone know anything about this camper conversion? Who did them? Where? Bus is in South Africa but I doubt it was converted here.
